Yui Onodera - Semi LatticeYui Onodera - Semi Lattice
karu:37, CD (digipak)
7 audio tracks, (p) 2015
Release date: 21/09/2015

Networks of sounds

Dreamy, melancholic, peaceful, or just plain gorgeous? As long as your ears are open, the sound world of Yui Onodera will take you where YOU want to go. From simple means (piano, guitar, computer), Onodera draws complex materials, and then mixes them back into deceptively simple results. The work draws inspiration (and its title) from an abstract structure thought up by architect Christopher Alexander. What you get is quiet background music if you leave it at that or, if you are willing to take the time to listen, a deep immersive journey.

Press quotes

On Semi Lattice, Onodera has created a set of seemingly minimal sound structures out of complex interactions that will effortlessly transform any room, while the details of their intriguing inner architectures only begin to become apparent through focused listening.
THE QUIETUS, November 2015

ONDAROCK, October 2015

Gradually evolving, hushed passages gradually enmesh sound on sound to forge immense, dense walls of shimmering sound, long, slow waves.

'Semi Lattice' is an accomplished piece of work that isn't afraid to change mood and pitch on a dime; and is an excellent listen from start to finish.
BLACK AUDIO, October 2015

The new album "Semi Lattice" by Yui Onodera is like taking a walk though a thick forest of moss and branches with the sonic sunlight filtering through the leaves of the trees while surrounded by a swarm of bees which aims to please and brings you to your knees. I enjoyed it.
JANEK SCHAEFER, October 2015

Yui Onodera's "Semi Lattice" consists of seven sound pictures. When listening to them one can imagine homogeneous landscapes full of details, or complex textures of colors, hence the title "lattice". They remind me of the "Sculptures sonores" which I have produced in the recent years, following John Cage's notation: "Sounds lasting and leaving from different points and forming a sounding sculpture which lasts", and presented on webSYNradio. Onodera has a wonderful feeling for timbers, choosing very meticulously each touch of the palette. Everything is obviously processed and mixed electronically but resonates very warmly and organically. These are not only compositions of timbers but also of spaces, where many elements are superimposed and slightly moving, growing larger or narrower. It is a real pleasure to discover one after another each of these landscapes, which duration is carefully calculated - although I think they could also be presented as a continuous and permanent sound installation in an open environment.

Yui Onodera's "Semi Lattice" consists of 7 sweeping tracks. Each piece rises and falls with an energy that manages to be propulsive and at the same time serene. Elements of nature bubble under the surface while denser layers from heavily processed instruments and synthesizers keep the tracks surging forward. The long fade out on #7 feels like an extended, exhaled breath. A beautiful CD worth repeated listens.
